Over the last twenty years, many publications have been influential in the development and advancement of arts education advocacy efforts. These documents include research, reports from government agencies, policy suggestions from national task forces, and the like. A list of some of these influential documents is included below with links to purchase or download the full text if full text is available.
Familiarity with these works provides an understanding of the context that has and continues to shape arts education and related advocacy efforts. Interested individuals are encouraged to utilize the NDEO Dance Education Literature and Research descriptive index (DELRdi) to identify additional materials that will aid them in targeted advocacy endeavors.

Arts Education for America's Students: A Shared Endeavor (2014)
This report is a consensus on arts education from a group of organizations who teamed up to look at the state of arts education in America, and identify underserved populations because they recognize the important skills that arts education provides. This document proposes to advance policies and resources to ensure arts education for all students in America's PK-12 public schools. The document also encourages collaboration across all sectors to improve instructional practices and to promote engagement between educators, parents, leaders, and stakeholders. Evidence: A Report on the Impact of Dance in the K-12 Setting (2013)
The National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) undertook a review of recent studies of how dance impact K-12 learning, paying particular attention to several areas determined to be under-researched in the 2004 Report to the Nation (Bonbright 2004). Studies reveal that dance classes can have a positive impact on student achievement, teacher satisfaction, and school culture. This evidence is especially useful to legislators, administrators, teachers, parents, and students advocating for dance in their school district.

Arts & Economic Prosperity IV (2010)
This 300-page report is a study of the non-profit arts and culture industry’s impact on the nation’s economy. The full report provides statistics that demonstrate the value of arts and culture locally, statewide, and nationally. Data is gathered in 182 study regions representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
There is also a short summary report available (approximately 20 pages) and a brochure giving report highlights.

Art of Collaboration: Promising Practices for Integrating the Arts and School Reform (2008)
This second publication in the Arts Education Partnership’s research and policy brief series describes promising practices for building community partnerships that integrate the arts into urban education systems. The publication, which is the result of a roundtable conversation among the directors of eight of the demonstration sites participating in The Ford Foundation's Integrating the Arts and Education Reform Initiative, details the sites' early strategies and successes in the areas of organizational infrastructure, partnership development, integrated arts education, and communications and advocacy. This 300-page report is the third study of the non-profit arts and culture industry’s impact on the nation’s economy. The full report provides statistics that demonstrate the value of arts and culture locally, statewide, and nationally. Data is gathered from 156 study regions (116 cities and countries, 35 multicounty regions, and five states. Data was collected from 6,080 nonprofit arts and culture organization and 94,500 attendees across 50 states. It is an important advocacy tool that can be found on the Americans for the Arts website.

Arts Integration Frameworks, Research & Practice: A Literature Review (2007)
This literature review is an essential resource for anyone involved in the research, theories, or methods and practices of arts integration. It covers what has been written between 1995 and 2007 in the U.S. and abroad and includes an historical overview, definitions and theoretical frameworks for arts integration, research and evaluation studies as well as methods and practices for each of the art forms. Critical Evidence: How the Arts Benefit Student Achievement (2006)
Why is it so important to keep the arts strong in our schools? How does the study of
the arts contribute to student achievement and success? These and other important questions are addressed in a new booklet published by the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) in collaboration with the Arts Education Partnership (AEP). Critical Evidence: How the Arts Benefit Student Achievement responds to the needs of policymakers, educators, parents and advocates for fact-based, non-technical language documenting the most current and compelling research on the value of arts learning experiences. From Anecdote to Evidence: Assessing the Status and Condition of Arts Education at the State Level (2006)
Without solid evidence about the status and condition of arts education in the nation's public schools, it is difficult to make a convincing case for the arts. This research and policy brief draws on the experiences of five states — Illinois, Kentucky, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Washington — as the basis for a discussion of various approaches and methodologies for conducting statewide arts education research. Visions of the Future: Education in the Arts (2006)
This 12 minute DVD features the voices of leaders from organizations such as the National School Boards Association, the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the Ford Foundation, National Association of Elementary School Principals, Young Audiences, and more. AEP created this DVD for partnership organizations to use in advocacy efforts when trying to reach local and state policy makers and other community leaders. The Arts and Children: A Success Story, a 1996 advocacy video featuring Meryl Streep, is also included on this DVD. This powerful video still holds up with a strong message that the arts are vital in the lives of young people, and makes a powerful complement to Visions of the Future. Third Space: When Learning Matters (2005)
Third Space tells the riveting story of the profound changes in the lives of kids,
teachers, and parents in ten economically disadvantaged communities across the country that place their bets on the arts as a way to create great schools. The schools become caring communities where kids - many of whom face challenges of poverty, the need to learn English, and to surmount learning difficulties - thrive and succeed and where teachers find new joy and satisfaction in teaching. Produced by the Arts Education Partnership and a task force chaired by the American

Research Priorities for Dance Education: A Report to the Nation (2004)
This report provides a summary of literature and research written over 76 years
(1926-2004) and analyzes the patterns, trends, and gaps in context to 20 US national
education issues, 14 populations served in dance education, and 27 areas of service.

Dance Education Literature and Research descriptive index (DELRdi) (2004)
A companion to the Research Priorities for Dance Education book (above). The
database provides comprehensive descriptive information on more than 4,100
dissertations, theses, published articles (representing over 150 periodicals),
and unpublished materials written from 1926 through 2009. It is continually updated. This database can be found on the National Dance Education Organization website, available to members.
Champions of Change (2003)
This report compiles seven major studies that provide new evidence of enhanced
learning and achievement when students are involved in a variety of arts. This report can be found on the Arts Education Partnership website.
Creating Quality Integrated and Interdisciplinary Arts Programs (2003)
This report offers some reflection on arts integration while examining a diverse
group of partnerships and a set of new important tools to aid efforts in improving

Envisioning Arts Assessment (2003)
A guide to help design large scale arts assessment decisions, this publication also provides informational support and activities to be used as both a practical tool and reference. This publication is out of print but available on the Arts Education Partnership website.
Critical Links: Learning in the Arts and Student Academic and Social Development (2002)
This Compendium summarizes and discusses 62 research studies that examine the
effects of arts learning on students’ social and academic skills. The research studies cover each of the art forms and have been widely used to help make the case that learning in the arts is academic, basic, and comprehensive. This study can be found on the Arts Education Partnership
To Move Forward (2001)
The Consortium of National Arts Education Associations (CNAEA) developed and published a white paper on accomplishments achieved in arts education to date and what next actions were needed to move the country forward in high school graduation requirements, university admission requirements, teacher credentialing (arts specialists, generalists), professional preparation and development, standards, and research. Gaining the Arts Advantage: Lessons from School Districts that Value Education(1999)
This report features case studies and profiles of 91 school districts throughout the United States that are recognized for offering arts education throughout their schools. It identifies the critical factors that must be in place to implement and sustain comprehensive arts education and stresses the essential role of community involvement and partnerships. Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) Report (1992)
This SCANS report identifies work-force skills needed for the 21st century workers. Much of the business community supports the SCANS findings and some big corporations, now a decade later, are supporting arts education as a means of delivering the skill sets needed for the creative economy of the 21st century.
