How To Get Published

At NDEO's national conference, various writing sessions are offered to support the needs
of aspiring authors. As a result of these sessions, this guide has been complied to serve
as a resource for writers in their research, writing, and publishing. The following tips are
based on the recommendations of writers and experts, Theresa Purcell Cone, Gayle Kassing,
Julie Kerr-Berry, Wendy Oliver, Helene Scheff, Marty Sprague, Ted Warburton
and Charles Woodford.
Step 5: Publishing: Acceptance and Beyond

Step 1:  Ponder an Idea
  • Develop and work with ideas that engage you and/or that emerge from your own practice.
  • Make sure you are fully committed and passionate about your work because you will work with it through many phases.
Step 2:  Prepare & Research
  • Take the time to brainstorm as divergently as possible.
  • With creative projects, plan from the beginning to analyze and write about your process and performance to create opportunities to think more deeply.
  • Use multiple media (notes, photos, video, interviews, etc.) to document your process and your reflections.
  • Create a flexible filing system for your resources and documentation that can grow as your ideas develop.

Step 3:  Plan the Writing Process

  • Make a plan and be realistic. Design your plan so you work in a media free environment. Turn off your phone and your email, and definitely turn off your social media or web surfing desires. Use your writing time to focus on writing.
  • Consider the pros and cons of single authorship versus joint authorship. Pros to joint authorship are that dialogue and debate broaden and deepen your perspective. The cons to joint authorship are that dialogue and debate lengthen the process.
  • Find an excellent resource to guide you through the entire writing process in Wendy Laura Belcher’s, Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks: A Guide to Academic Publishing Success, available from Amazon. Belcher organizes the writing process into manageable tasks to help you prepare an article for publication in just 12
    weeks.

Step 4: Peruse NDEO's Publishers' List

  • Mine the references in NDEO's Publisher List. Read publisher’s mission statements and their publishing focus. Select one that most closely matches your needs.
  • Attend to the audience(s) the publisher serves.
  • Read articles or works by authors carried by that publisher.
  • When writing to publish in a journal, make sure the journal is still in business, check the journal’s acceptance rates, and find out if the editor is still in the job or likely to change.
  • Attend closely to each publisher’s guidelines for authors. Provide all information requested thoroughly and completely, and attend to all of the formatting details.
  • Make sure you understand about who has the copyright to your work and the publisher’s responsibilities in marketing your work.
  • Many journals include special sections for graduate student or first-time authors.  The “Dancelines” section in Research in Dance Education provides opportunities for more generative feedback than is common.
Step 5. Publishing: Acceptance and Beyond
  • Have a big picture and be very attentive to detail. Ignoring the journal’s focus and stylistic requirements and/or problems with grammar and spelling are surest ways to get rejected.
  • Read all the comments you receive from the reviewers and editors. Take a day off, read them again, think and reflect on the comments first before you respond.
  • Avoid taking umbrage at peer reviewer or editor comments; do not attack editor or disparage the journal.
  • Re-energize your commitment to and passion for your work. Remember, you are in this process “till publishing do we part.”
