Cultivating Equity and Access: Dance Education for All

The 19th Annual National Conference of the National Dance Education Organization will be hosted at the Hyatt Regency San Antonio from November 12-14, 2017. The theme of the conference is Cultivating Equity and Access: Dance Education for All. A day of pre-conference intensive sessions will be offered for dance educators on Saturday, November 11 and include a youth dance workshop in conjunction with the National Conference in San Antonio. The workshop will be held on November 11 from 8:30am-3:30pm resulting in the creation of a dance that will be performed that day in an informal Local Student Sharing Performance from 6:30-7:30pm at the Hyatt Regency. For information on participating in the workshop and performance please read below.

Local Student Sharing Performance

An annual event at NDEO's National Conference, the Student Sharing Performance showcases the diversity and strength of local students (up to age 18) in an adjudicated informal showing. To submit your work, please read the instructions below.

What to submit

  • Video (rehearsal or performance) of an original dance work in any genre or style performed by students in grades K-12, attending public, private, or charter schools, dance studios, or community organizations in San Antonio or anywhere in Texas so long as they can provide their own transportation and housing and attend tech rehearsal before the performance
  • Work must be no longer than 8 minutes in length

Priority given to

  • work choreographed by students or created in collaboration with students
  • schools with active NHSDA Chapters and students in grades K-12
  • work that fits the Conference theme, “Cultivating Equity and Access: Dance Education for All”
  • work must be appropriate for the students’ age and skill level. No profanity or suggestive music, costuming, or movement

Deadlines

  • August 15, 2017: All submissions due, including video link
  • August 31, 2017: Email notification of selection
  • September 15, 2017: Commitment form due
  • October 13, 2017: Program Notes and Music File Due with video link of the actual dance to be presented. Please include a picture of a dancer wearing a costume if the dancers are not in costume in video.
  • November 11, 2017: Tech Rehearsal 3:30-5:30 and Performance 6:30-7:30. Please note, this performance will be held in the hotel ballroom. There will be a sound system but no theatrical lighting.

Youth Dance Workshop & Performance

The workshop will focus on teaching dance-making skills to youth dancers, including creating movement themes and variations, exploring selected choreographic structures and utilizing elements of design to create exciting, meaningful and impactful work. The workshop will feature the Language of Dance® Approach to improvise, explore, create and revise dances and will use dance masterworks to generate ideas in movement, design and meaning. Students ages 13-18 who are currently enrolled in a private or public school dance program are encouraged to attend. Students must have at least three years of dance experience in any dance genre or style.
