OPDI-122: Celebrating Voices of Contemporary Choreographers

Fall 2021 Semester - September 13 to December 5

Course Description

In this course, we will look at a wide range of artistic works created by Black, Women, and indigenous choreographers and explore applications to utilize these works in our teaching, learning, and appreciation of dance. These voices address critical issues in American life and in the development of American dance. You will examine your own practices in the classroom and in your choreography and discuss ways of expanding what you learn into practice. This course will offer you exposure to contemporary choreography and cultural material often not available to everyone in live performance and will help develop your ability to integrate dance as a relative art into other disciplines such as literature, visual art, music, history, women’s studies, African American studies, Asian studies, Latinx studies, anthropology, sociology, and social justice. Drawing on the vast library of the Jacobs Pillow Dance Interactive, this course uses a wide array of video clips, assignment and discussion boards, and hosts two synchronous class discussions to share concepts and applications to teaching and learning situations and to the creative process. How to Enroll in the Course

1) Complete the OPDI Application if you have not previously done so.

2) Sign up for an NDEO Membership if you are not a current member.

3) Register and Pay for the course - Go to www.ndeo.org and login to your individual NDEO Membership with your user name and password. Then navigate to the Profile link in the drop down menu under your name top right corner. Once in the Profile section you will see a link to Access OPDI. Click on that to see the list of courses open for enrollment. Click on the Enroll icon for the course you want to register for. Follow the prompts and pay the tuition by credit card at the end. Professor Bio

Naima Prevots, BA Brooklyn College, Phi Beta Kappa, MS University of Wisconsin, PhD, University of Southern California, is Professor Emerita from American University, where for 34 years she was Director of Dance and for three years was Chair, Department of Performing Arts. Recipient of six Fulbright awards, an NEH fellowship and other honors, she is the author of three books, numerous monographs and articles. Her most recent award was from American Ballet Theatre, to research their State Department international touring. She has taught dance history for over forty years, and has lectured and consulted nationally and internationally. She has been on boards of Fulbright Association, CORD, ADG, SDHS, NDEO and served as panelist for National Endowments for Arts and for Humanities, Department of Education, and Arts and Humanities Council of Washington, D.C. Her book “Dance for Export: Cultural Diplomacy and the Cold War” is now on kindle available at Amazon.
